Federal Standard & Regulation

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) 1910.133(b)(2) eye protection standard states that OSHA will accept eye and face protective devices that the employer demonstrates are at least as effective as devices that are constructed in accordance with ANSI/ISEA Z87.1, the American National Standard for eye and face protection.

American National Standards

ANSI/ISEA Z87.1-2020 prescribes the design, performance specifications, and marking of safety eye and face products. It was developed by the Z87 Committee on Safety Standards for Eye Protection, which is administered by ISEA.

ANSI/ISEA Z87.62-2021 sets forth criteria related to the general requirements, testing, permanent marking(s), selection, care and use of protectors to minimize or prevent exposure to the wearer’s eyes and/or face (mucocutaneous exposures, nose and mouth) caused by spray or spurt of blood, body fluids and/or other potentially infectious materials (OPIM). 

Which type of eye and face protection is right for you?

Appropriate eye and face protection can take many forms. Safety glasses, goggles, helmets, and face shields can protect employees from the hazards of flying fragments, large chips, hot sparks, and splashes, as well as objects, particles, sand, dirt, mists, dusts, and glare.

It is important that workers and supervisors understand the type of protector needed based on the hazards present.
